Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis discloses her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis
Ananda Lewis is bravely talking about her fight against cancer.
The ex-MTV VJ and “Teen Summit” host, now 51, revealed in a CNN interview that she is battling stage 4 breast cancer.
Lewis explained that she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2019 after discovering a lump in her breast. Despite her doctors advising her to undergo a double mastectomy, she opted not to, and learned last year that the cancer had progressed to stage 4.
“It was the first time I had to confront the idea of death,” she shared with CNN. “I felt like this is how my journey ends. I don’t usually fear things, but I was frustrated and a bit angry at myself.”
Stage 4 breast cancer is when the disease has spread to different parts of the body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, while there is no cure, improved treatment options are allowing more people with metastatic breast cancer to live longer.
Lewis initially shared her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis through an emotional Instagram video in October 2020, coinciding with the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She mentioned that she had been “struggling to eradicate cancer from my body for nearly two years” and encouraged her followers not to delay their mammograms as she had done.
“For a long time, I refused to get mammograms, and that was a mistake,” she reflected, stressing, “If I had kept up with my mammograms from the recommended age of 40, they would have detected the tumor in my breast much sooner, making it easier to manage.”
Lewis mentioned to CNN that a scan last year revealed the cancer had spread “up my spine, through my hips, nearly everywhere except my brain.” However, in her recent interview with The New York Times, she shared that she is currently on medication that is “working wonderfully” for her.
In a YouTube discussion, Lewis again emphasized her “biggest mistake” was not prioritizing early detection. Nevertheless, she shared that a year after her stage 4 diagnosis, she now feels “fantastic.” “I intend to live and thrive,” she confidently stated.
This year has seen several celebrities share their breast cancer diagnoses, including Olivia Munn and “The Office” star Jenna Fischer. Fischer revealed on Instagram that she was diagnosed with stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer but is now cancer-free after undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. In her announcement, she highlighted the importance of not skipping mammograms.
“My tumor was so small that it couldn’t be detected through a physical examination,” Fischer explained. “If I had waited six more months for my check-up, the situation might have been much more serious. It could have spread.”
