Angela Bassett Wins First Emmy at Creative Arts Emmy Awards; Pat Sajak Honored

Angela Bassett has celebrated her first Emmy victory.

During the initial round of winners at the Creative Arts Emmys held on Saturday, the talented “Black Panther” actress, who is 66 years old, received the award for outstanding narrator for her work on the National Geographic series “Queens.”

This marks Bassett’s inaugural win at the Emmy Awards after having been nominated for nine Primetime Emmys, including one for “American Horror Story.” Her recognition comes on the heels of her Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination for her performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” as well as receiving an honorary Oscar earlier this year at the Governors Awards.

“I’m just a girl who dreamed of acting, inspired by my mentors who paved the way. I poured my energy and love into making that dream a reality,” she expressed to the media in an Instagram video. “Every day, I try to nurture that first love.”

Bassett also posted a snapshot with her Emmy on Instagram, expressing, “I can’t describe how amazing it feels to hold this in my hands.”

The Creative Arts Emmys recognize “outstanding artistic and technical achievements in television” and are awarded before the main Primetime Emmys event. The current edition takes place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Another highlight from the Creative Arts Emmys was Pat Sajak, who won the award for outstanding game show host for “Wheel of Fortune” just three months after retiring from the show. He previously secured the best game-show host daytime Emmy in 1993, 1997, and 1998.

“Jeopardy!” claimed the Emmy for outstanding game show, while Alan Cumming earned the title of outstanding host for a reality program for “The Traitors.” Netflix’s “Love on the Spectrum” was recognized for its outstanding casting in a reality program.

Maya Rudolph captured her sixth Emmy, winning for outstanding character voiceover performance in “Big Mouth.”

The award for outstanding animated program went to “Blue Eye Samurai,” while “Shark Tank” took home the award for outstanding structured reality program. “Welcome to Wrexham” won for outstanding unstructured reality program. “Saturday Night Live” holds the record for the most Creative Arts Emmys, with six wins celebrating its achievements in areas like production design and hairstyling.

The Creative Arts Emmys are taking place over two nights, with the festivities continuing on Sunday. A edited recap of the events will broadcast on September 14 on FXX. Upcoming prestigious awards yet to be announced include guest actor and actress, where Jamie Lee Curtis might snag her first Emmy for her role in “The Bear.”

Following the Creative Arts Emmys, the Primetime Emmys will be held on September 15 on ABC.
