New Research Shows Plugged Wells and Decreased Injection Rates Diminish Induced Earthquake Occurrences in Oklahoma

Wastewater injection resulting from oil and gas production in Oklahoma caused a dramatic rise in seismic activity in the state between 2009 and 2015. But regulatory efforts to backfill some injection wells with cement and reduce injection volumes have been effective in lowering the state's induced earthquake rate, according to a new study. Angelina Jolie Embraces Opera with Role in ‘Maria’ Following Criticism of Her Singing Talent

Angelina Jolie takes on opera role in ‘Maria’ after experiencing criticism about her singing

Angelina Jolie is discovering her singing talent.

The “Maleficent” actress, 49, shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she is ready to portray the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in the new biopic “Maria,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Jolie confessed that she felt apprehensive about singing in the film after previous experiences left her doubting her musical skills.

“It was like an out-of-body experience because I’m not a singer,” she explained. “Someone in my past was not supportive of my singing. It was during a relationship, and it made me believe I couldn’t really sing.”

She added, “I had attended theater school, so it was surprising that someone else’s opinion would affect me like that. It took a lot for me to overcome those feelings before I could even begin singing.”

Jolie chose not to identify the ex-partner. She collaborated with director Pablo Larraín on “Maria,” who has previously directed Natalie Portman in “Jackie” and Kristen Stewart in “Spencer,” both of which garnered Oscar nominations for their lead performances.

During a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Jolie expressed that she felt “extremely anxious” about performing musically in “Maria,” revealing that she spent “almost seven months” preparing for the role.

“The first time I sang, I was so nervous,” she recalled. “My sons were present to help block the doorway so that no one else could come in. I was trembling I was scared I wouldn’t do her justice, and I hadn’t performed publicly before.”

Despite her nerves, Jolie, an Academy Award winner for “Girl, Interrupted,” is already generating Oscar buzz for this performance. A clip posted on social media by Variety showed the actress clearly moved during an eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.

When questioned about the potential for an Oscar nomination during the press conference, Jolie stated her primary focus is on impressing fans of Maria Callas and opera.

“My biggest fear is letting them down,” she said, “I really didn’t want to disrespect her legacy.”

In her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie expressed intentions to move out of Los Angeles once her children are older.

“I’m here due to my divorce, but I plan to leave when they turn 18,” she mentioned. “Having a large family, I want them to have privacy, peace, and security. While I enjoy my home and raising my kids here, sometimes this place feels I’ve found a different sense of humanity around the world compared to what I experienced growing up here.”
