Don’t miss it: ASU football fans celebrate too soon in thrilling win over BYU
Officials signaled a metaphorical false start as Arizona State football fans rushed the field following their unexpected victory over BYU on Saturday.
In a nail-biting match, the No. 22 Sun Devils triumphed over the No. 15 Cougars with a score of 28-23. ASU fans dashed onto the field in excitement as goalposts came down at Mountain America Stadium, Tempe, Arizona. However, they jumped the gun as there was still 1 second remaining on the clock, leaving a pass from Sun Devils’ quarterback Sam Leavitt incomplete.
As officials worked to restore order, the goalposts were hoisted back up for the final play. Arizona State’s coach, Kenny Dillingham, got into a lively dispute with the referees, believing the game was effectively over.
After a lengthy delay, referees and security officials, supported by some players, managed to clear the field. With just 1 second left, BYU needed to execute a Hail Mary pass to try to turn the game around, which did not sit well with the already celebrating ASU fans.
BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff attempted a pass to Chase Roberts, which fell incomplete after reaching the 1-yard line, sealing the Sun Devils’ victory.
With this win against BYU, alongside Colorado’s recent loss, Arizona State has now tied with the Cougars and Buffaloes at 6-2 in Big 12 standings as the regular season draws to a close. The winner of the Big 12 championship game will automatically secure a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.
