Assessing the Trade: Brandon Ingram Moves to the Raptors in Blockbuster Deal

Brandon Ingram Trade Analysis: Pelicans Trade Former All-Star to Raptors

The Toronto Raptors have successfully acquired Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans, while the Pelicans received Bruce Brown Jr., Kelly Olynyk, a first-round draft pick, and a second-round draft pick in the transaction, according to a source with knowledge of the trade who spoke to YSL News Sports on the condition of anonymity, pending official confirmation of the trade.

Ingram’s name has been in circulation as a potential trade option since the beginning of the season, especially after Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin discussed Ingram’s upcoming free agency and hinted at the team’s “economic realities.”

These economic pressures indicated that retaining Ingram at his desired salary might not be feasible for the team.

Evaluating the Trade: Pelicans vs. Raptors:

Toronto Raptors Rating: A

Despite Toronto’s current record of 16-35, this trade could significantly elevate the team’s potential with Ingram joining Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Gradey Dick, Jakob Poeltl, and Ochai Agbaji.

Although Ingram has played only 18 games this season due to injuries, he has averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists, with shooting percentages of 46.5% from the field, 37.4% from three-point range, and 85.5% from the free-throw line. He has been sidelined since December 8 due to a sprained left ankle.

Once he is back on the court, he is expected to enhance the Raptors’ offensive capabilities and enjoy better playmaking chances within their rotation.

The Raptors have already committed substantial finances to Barnes, Barrett, and Quickley, which raises questions about how they will manage Ingram’s impending contract as they build their roster further.

New Orleans Pelicans Rating: B

The season for New Orleans has been marred by injuries, and they have difficult financial choices to consider. The Pelicans already took steps to avoid the luxury tax by trading Daniel Theis earlier this week.

Brown’s contract is set to expire, while Olynyk has a manageable salary and will become a free agent after the 2025-26 season. Additionally, acquiring a first-round pick is advantageous for both potential star selections and for handling salary cap considerations.

It’s unfortunate that the Pelicans never had the opportunity to see how a fully healthy lineup featuring Ingram, Zion Williamson, and Dejounte Murray would perform together.
