Astros GM indicates possibility of Alex Bregman’s return amid ongoing rumors
Houston Astros’ general manager Dana Brown has mentioned that discussions regarding the potential return of free agent third baseman Alex Bregman are ongoing and are progressing positively, although no agreement is currently in the works.
“When we made some trades and adjustments this offseason, we didn’t anticipate that Bregman would still be available at this stage,” Brown stated during the team’s fan fest on Saturday. “We’ve engaged in discussions, and what’s noteworthy is that he remains on the market, so it’s not as though we’re not considering him.”
The Astros have already moved All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for third baseman Isaac Paredes, right-hander Hayden Wesneski, and third-base prospect Cam Smith. Additionally, they signed free agent first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year contract worth $60 million this offseason.
“I would say [the door is] slightly open,” Brown said regarding Bregman. “The fact that he’s still on the market makes it intriguing. Like, ‘Wow, this guy is an outstanding player who has accomplished so much for us.’ We’ll keep that door slightly open and see where our discussions go.”
Bregman, who is 30 years old, finished the 2024 season with a batting average of .260, alongside 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. Selected second overall by the Astros in 2015, he played a key role in the team’s World Series victories in 2017 and 2022.
