Aubrey Plaza blasts Tony Hinchcliffe’s ‘disgusting’ Puerto Rico comments
Aubrey Plaza has some choice words for comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, by way of her abuelita.
The “Agatha All Along” star responded to the comedian’s “floating island of garbage” comments at former President Donald Trump’s closing campaign rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, at WSJ. Magazine’s Innovator Awards on Tuesday.
“I just wanted to very quickly respond to the racist joke that was made at that Trump rally about Puerto Rico, where most of my family is from,” Plaza said at the event, where she was a presenter. “Thankfully, my sweet abuelita wasn’t here to hear that disgusting remark.”
She continued: “But if she was alive today, I think she would say, ‘Tony Hinchcliffe, go (expletive) yourself.’ And yes, the Wall Street Journal can quote me on that.”
Hinchcliffe’s remarks at the Republican presidential nominee’s rally on Sunday night have come under severe scrutiny. “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now,” the comedian, whose stage name is Kill Tony, said at the event. “I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
Plaza previously endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and joined a number of stars who have proudly taken on “childless cat lady” monikers.
The actress posted a photoshopped image of herself and Grumpy Cat last month with the caption, “HARRIS us WALZ.”
Several celebrities, including Puerto Rican artists Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin condemned the comments and showed support for Harris.
Actors including Gina Rodriguez, Rosie Perez, Luis Guzmán, Niecy Nash-Betts and Lin-Manuel Miranda also denounced the comedian’s remarks or encouraged their followers to vote for Harris.
“There are people for whom this is fine, it’s just a bad joke, lighten up. For many of us, this ‘joke’ is a reminder of how bad it was under Trump, how he treated our people in our moment of need,” Miranda wrote of the former president’s response to Hurricane Maria in an Instagram post on Monday. “I am voting for VP Kamala Harris. If you are eligible to vote, please vote.”
