It was a tough game for the running backs of the Commanders.

The day started with Brian Robinson Jr. leaving the game due to an ankle injury, although he managed to return later. Then, Austin Ekeler got injured, appearing to be knocked out after an intense final moment.

The Week 12 matchup against the Cowboys was filled with lead changes, chaotic special teams play, and thrilling moments for the Commanders. Although their attempt to rally fell short, leaving Washington with a 7-4 record, attention has now turned to Ekeler’s condition.

Here’s the latest on the veteran running back for the Commanders.

Update on Austin Ekeler’s Injury

LANDOVER, Md. — Austin Ekeler of the Washington Commanders was taken to the hospital after receiving a concussion late in Sunday’s contest against the Dallas Cowboys, as confirmed by a team spokesperson who stated it was “out of an abundance of caution.”

Ekeler sustained the injury during the last kick return of the game while the Commanders were eight points behind with under ten seconds remaining. Two Cowboys players made a hard tackle, causing Ekeler’s helmet to hit the ground violently. He lay on the field for several minutes, prompting players from both teams to kneel as the Commanders’ medical staff assessed him.

After the incident, Ekeler was seen walking off the field, but he needed substantial assistance from the trainers.

In the matchup against Dallas, Ekeler managed to rush for 22 yards on 9 carries and caught two passes for a total of two yards.

The eight-year veteran is in his first season with the Commanders after spending seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. This season, he has scored four rushing touchdowns and entered the game with 667 total yards from scrimmage.

Commanders’ Running Back Depth Chart

  • Brian Robinson Jr.
  • Jeremy McNichols

If Ekeler is required to sit out, Washington will be down to just two running backs. Robinson Jr. would likely remain the starter, while McNichols would step up to take on a larger role.
