Bally Sports is Transforming into FanDuel Sports Network: Teams from MLB, NBA, NHL Impacted
A major change is happening with the regional sports networks associated with the sports betting company, which has local broadcast agreements for over 30 teams in MLB, NBA, NHL, and WNBA.
Bally Sports will be rebranded as FanDuel Sports Network effective Monday, following an announcement from Diamond Sports Group about a “broad, long-term commercial partnership.” The financial terms of this agreement were not revealed.
Diamond Sports Group, the top owner of regional sports networks in the U.S., entered bankruptcy in March 2023, raising concerns about the local broadcasting rights for numerous professional teams, prompting league involvement. Originally created in 2019 to manage the sale of a portfolio with 22 regional FOX Sports Networks and local rights for 42 major pro teams, it has since had to let go of contracts to maintain its viability.
Earlier this month, Diamond Sports Group proposed a reorganization plan that suggested it might only continue broadcasting for one MLB team (Atlanta Braves), which jeopardizes 11 MLB teams’ regional sports network contracts for the upcoming 2025 season. Additionally, the group has terminated its agreements with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans amidst its bankruptcy proceedings.
For the 2024-25 season, the FanDuel Sports Network will broadcast for 13 NBA teams and eight NHL teams across 16 regional sports networks, as a judge recently approved an updated agreement with the leagues last month. The network will also introduce a streaming service for viewers who have unsubscribed from traditional cable, with plans to include syndications of FanDuel TV programs beyond just live game coverage.
David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group, stated, “Partnering with FanDuel opens up a fantastic opportunity for Diamond to enhance the fan experience and enrich the value we deliver to our teams, leagues, and distribution partners.” He added that this collaboration will bolster the strong connection the regional sports networks have with local fans and improve their direct-to-consumer options for a growing online audience. With contracts finalized with the NBA, NHL, and key distributors, the focus remains on progressing the business and generating value for team partners and stakeholders.
