Battling the Elements: January’s Last Stand Against Winter’s Wrath

Winds and whiteouts? January might still have surprises in store

If you were hoping winter was about to ease its hold on the U.S., you might want to reconsider.

Two Canadian weather systems are anticipated to bring brisk winds, snow squalls, and reduced visibility in areas stretching from West Virginia to Maine early this week, as reported by Accuweather.com. This follows a short reprieve from the bitter cold that has gripped much of the country this January.

Winds can reach up to 40 mph from eastern Minnesota to the New England coastline, making already cold temperatures feel even chillier while blowing snow around and creating hazardous driving conditions.

The regions surrounding the Great Lakes may experience frigid winds along with snow showers and squalls from Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Where can whiteouts be expected?

Forecasts indicate that New England, New York, most of Pennsylvania, and parts of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and West Virginia will experience snowfall.

The heaviest accumulation is predicted near the eastern shores of the Great Lakes, with several inches expected further inland, particularly across parts of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. Major highways such as Interstates 80, 81, and 76, which run through Pennsylvania, could be affected.

In some areas, quickly falling snow and strong winds could result in whiteout conditions, so drivers are advised to take precautions and monitor local weather updates. The Boston metropolitan area and other portions of Massachusetts might also face squalls, high winds, and other perilous conditions.

Winter storm alerts in mountains near LA

The storm system that has led to flooding in Southern California is now bringing several inches of snow to its mountains, resulting in multiple advisories and warnings about hazardous travel conditions due to icy roads.

The system is expected to move through the region until Tuesday, leaving a cold air mass in its wake that will keep overnight lows close to freezing in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles County’s eastern San Gabriel Mountains, snow accumulations could reach up to 2 feet with winds at 35 mph, as per a winter storm warning in effect until Monday afternoon. Similar alerts have been issued for the mountains in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

As the snow builds up and ice forms on roadways, officials have begun closing mountain roads. Interstate 5, which spans California, was shut down between Bakersfield and Santa Clarita due to snowfall, and the state’s Department of Public Transportation advised drivers to take the 101 freeway instead.

Is it February yet?

January has brought frigid temperatures, snow, and ice to areas that typically do not experience harsh winter conditions. Snow has even fallen as far south as the Florida panhandle and into Gulf states like Alabama.

The Mid-Atlantic region has been enduring extended cold snaps, with temperatures in Washington, D.C. averaging 6 degrees below normal; Philadelphia by 5 degrees; and New York City around 4 degrees below average, according to Accuweather.

Meteorologists predict a shift to a more moderate weather pattern will bring slightly warmer temperatures to the Northeast as February approaches.
