What Beyoncé’s Nominations Mean
This year’s Grammy awards are particularly exciting for the Beyhive, as many fans are eager to see if Beyoncé will finally win the album of the year award.
Historically, only three Black women have been awarded the album of the year: Natalie Cole (1992), Whitney Houston (1994), and Lauryn Hill (1999). Beyoncé has faced disappointment in this category four times with her albums: “I Am…Sasha Fierce,” “Beyoncé,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.”
This year is also notable as it is the first occasion a Black woman has been nominated for a country album in the main category. Notably, Ray Charles was nominated for album of the year for “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music” back in 1962.
No Black woman has won a Grammy for a country song to date. In 2020, Mickey Guyton made history as the first Black woman to be nominated in a country music category with her song “Black Like Me.”
This year, Jay-Z voiced his concerns to the Recording Academy about Beyoncé’s previous snubs while he accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, igniting a broader discussion on industry exclusion.
Earlier, Beyoncé was notably overlooked with no nominations at the 2024 Country Music Association Awards, despite her innovative album being celebrated. While she led the nominations for the People’s Choice Country Awards with a total of 12, she did not win any.
Beyoncé first revealed her eighth studio album through a surprise commercial during the Super Bowl in February, launching the singles “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which quickly gained widespread attention, much like the album itself. “Cowboy Carter” has since shattered numerous records and highlighted the contributions of Black artists in country music.
Before the album’s release, Beyoncé candidly reflected on her experiences in the industry, referencing her performance at the CMA Awards with The Chicks in 2016.
“This album has been in the works for over five years. It emerged from an experience where I felt unwelcome, and it became clear that I didn’t belong,” she shared on Instagram. “The challenges I faced entering this genre pushed me to overcome restrictions placed on me. Act II is the result of my efforts to merge and explore different styles to create this body of work.”
The Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 2 at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles.
