Live updates as Biden and Trump meet at the White House: Key details and how to watch

President-elect Donald Trump is making a temporary return to the White House on Wednesday.

Trump is set to meet with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, just a week after winning against Vice President Kamala Harris for a second term. This meeting between the outgoing president and his successor is usually awkward, and the tension is intensified due to their past conflict.

Biden has labeled Trump a danger to democracy for months, while Trump has consistently referred to Biden as the worst president the country has had.

However, following the election, Biden reached out to Trump last week to congratulate him and invite him to Washington, a courtesy Trump did not extend when Biden defeated him in 2020.

The situation is complicated further because Biden had initially hoped to run for another term but changed his mind after a challenging debate with Trump in June, which led to his withdrawal from the race and the Democratic nomination going to Harris.

In addition to his meeting with Biden, Trump will also engage with lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Wednesday as they vote for key leadership positions in Congress.

Melania Trump will not accompany Donald Trump to the White House

Melania Trump has decided not to participate in the tea.

After Donald Trump’s significant victory over Vice President Kamala Harris became apparent, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden extended an invitation to Donald and Melania Trump to come to the White House.

Trump accepted the invitation immediately, expressing through a spokesperson his eagerness for the meeting, but Melania Trump has not commented.

On Wednesday, she confirmed her absence from Jill Biden’s tea.

“Her husband’s return to the Oval Office to start the transition is positive, and she wishes him great success,” stated Melania Trump’s office on X.

Biden to stress ‘peaceful transition’ during meeting with Trump

Biden’s primary message for the meeting with Trump on Wednesday will focus on the importance of a peaceful handover of power.

“He aims to demonstrate to Americans that the system is functional, that the institutions should be trusted, and that established norms are significant,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday. “He seeks to exemplify what a peaceful transition of power entails.”

This meeting takes place four years after Trump declined to acknowledge his loss to Biden in the 2020 election and propagated unfounded conspiracy theories in attempts to overturn the results. Those actions led to the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters trying to disrupt the electoral vote count.

Does Biden still view Trump as a ‘threat to democracy’?

This year, Biden has consistently warned that Trump poses a “threat to democracy” following Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election results.

Biden will have the opportunity to address whether he still holds this view during his meeting with Trump on Wednesday morning.

This question is likely to be raised by reporters present before the meeting begins.

While at his beach house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, over the weekend, Biden was asked about it but sidestepped the issue, saying, “I’m going to see him on Wednesday.”

In a speech at the White House Rose Garden after the election, Biden reassured supporters: “We will be fine, but it’s essential to remain engaged.”

When asked last week if Biden still considers Trump a threat to democracy, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded, “We are focused on respecting the American people’s decision. We’re not looking to create any division here.”

Will Melania Trump join Jill Biden for tea?

Besides the meeting between the president-elect and the current president, there is another longstanding tradition in American politics where first ladies host tea with their successors.

So will Melania Trump attend the tea with First Lady Jill Biden on Wednesday?

Not likely.

Multiple news sources suggest that Melania Trump will decline Jill Biden’s tea invitation, breaking a White House tradition for the second time in four years. The Trumps did not welcome the Bidens during their presidency after Biden won in 2020.
