According to an annual National Retail Federation survey, a record 183.4 million people plan to shop in stores and online from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday this year, surpassing the previous high of 182 million in 2023.

Black Friday is one of the largest shopping events of the year. The term “Black Friday” was reportedly coined in the 1950s by Philadelphia police to describe the chaos caused by suburbans flooding the city for shopping.

By 1961, the term gained traction within Philadelphia, but it didn’t become nationally recognized until the late 1980s when retailers decided to flip the narrative, associating the day with profitability. They explained that businesses moved from being “in the red” (losing money) to “in the black” (making money) thanks to the sales boom after Thanksgiving.

When do Black Friday 2024 sales begin?

As online shopping continues to gain popularity, many retailers have begun their Black Friday discounts earlier and extended their sales duration. Notable retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Staples, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Target started offering discounts as early as the beginning of November. However, the most significant deals are often saved for Black Friday itself or Cyber Monday.

When does Black Friday start on Amazon?

Amazon’s Black Friday Week began on Thursday, November 21, and will continue until Friday, November 29. Shoppers can find deals of up to 55% off on select Amazon products, including Fire Smart TVs and Kindles, as well as up to 50% off on items from popular franchises like Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars. There are also discounts of up to 50% on select vacuum brands like iRobot, Roborock, and Shark. Flash deals will also be available throughout the week and on the main day itself.

When does Black Friday start at Walmart?

Walmart kicked off its Black Friday sales on Monday, November 25, with offers on items like a 65-inch Samsung DU69 4K Smart TV, Apple iPhone 13, Beats Solo 3 Wireless Headphones, and Dyson V11 Extra Cordless Vacuum Cleaner. The store promises discounts of up to 70% on a wide range of products, from cookware to beauty items and toys to clothing.

The in-store shopping event begins on Friday, November 29, at 6 a.m. local time.

In anticipation of Black Friday, Walmart also provided a 50% discount on their Walmart+ annual membership, which offers early access to deals, free shipping and delivery, Paramount+ streaming, fuel discounts, and various other advantages.

When does Black Friday start at Target?

Target has kicked off its Black Friday sale starting Sunday, Nov. 24, offering deals for the entire week. More detailed Black Friday weekend discounts will come out between Nov. 28 and 30, featuring promotions on beauty gifts, clothing, and holiday decorations.

This Black Friday, Target will also roll out new editions of “Taylor Swift – The Eras Tour Book” and “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” available on CD and vinyl, which includes four acoustic bonus tracks; the vinyl version even comes with a poster of Swift.

On Black Friday, Target locations will open at 6 a.m. local time and close at their usual hours (be sure to check local timings). From Nov. 30 to Dec. 23, stores will extend their hours to 7 a.m. to midnight.

What time does Black Friday start at Best Buy?

Best Buy will begin its extensive Black Friday offerings online and in-store starting on Thanksgiving Day and running through Nov. 30, though stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving.

According to a news release, you can look forward to Black Friday discounts on a wide range of products including TVs, laptops, headphones, smart rings, electric scooters, and beyond. Moreover, during the Black Friday Sale, additional doorbusters on top tech items and Flash Deals on Best Buy Drops will be available, making it a sale you won’t want to overlook.

Featured deals will include the LG 48″ Class B4 Series OLED 4K smart TV, Dyson Digital Slim Cordless Vacuum, HP Victus 15.6″ AMD Gaming Laptop, Samsung 75″ Class DU6950 Series Smart TV, and LG 45″ OLED Gaming Monitor.

In addition to the doorbusters, flash deals on Best Buy Drops will be available throughout the day exclusively via the Best Buy App, starting from 8 a.m. CT, according to the retailer.
