Déjà vu: Blue Jays’ Bowden Francis Falls Short in No-Hitter Against Mets
In an almost surreal repeat, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis faced a similar fate just 18 days after his previous no-hit attempt was thwarted by a ninth-inning home run.
On Wednesday, Francis pitched exceptionally well against the New York Mets, keeping them without a hit for eight innings. However, during the ninth inning, after reaching 108 pitches, he surrendered a lead-off home run to Francisco Lindor, which tied the game at 1-1.
This was a case of déjà vu for Francis, who experienced a similar scenario against the Los Angeles Angels on August 24, where a solo home run by Taylor Ward ended his no-hit bid in the ninth inning.
Dave Stieb’s no-hitter from 1990 remains the only one recorded in the history of the Blue Jays franchise.
At 28 years old, Francis made his major league debut with Toronto in 2022, and Wednesday marked his 46th appearance in the big leagues, with this being his 11th start.
After the home run by Lindor, Francis was taken out of the game, finishing with one walk, two hit batters, and one strikeout.
The Mets capitalized on the situation, scoring six runs in the ninth inning as Toronto’s relief pitchers Chad Green and Genesis Cabrera struggled, issuing four walks and allowing three hits in what became an overwhelming disaster. Francisco Alvarez’s three-run homer off Cabrera sealed the game, leading to a 6-2 victory for New York.
