Veteran Sportscaster Bob Costas, 72, Steps Down from MLB Play-by-Play
Bob Costas has officially ended his baseball commentary career.
Costas, 72, has announced his retirement from MLB play-by-play broadcasting, a choice he plans to discuss further in the future.
His final assignment was during the American League Division Series featuring the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals on TBS earlier this month, where the Yankees triumphed in four games. While some fans expressed dissatisfaction with his performance on social media—citing a perceived lack of excitement and some miscommunications—these reactions are said not to have influenced his decision to retire.
Costas decided to step away from his play-by-play role at the beginning of the season, aligning this choice with the conclusion of his contract with TNT Sports.
Bob Costas has been a voice in Major League Baseball for over 40 years, having begun his journey as a play-by-play announcer for the sport.
Costas began his career with NBC Sports in 1980, covering a wide range of sports including the Olympics, NBA, and NFL until he left the network in 2019. He was part of MLB Network since it launched in 2009 and later joined TNT Sports in 2021.
Although he has stepped back from play-by-play commentary, Costas will still be actively involved with MLB Network as a studio show analyst and will continue to announce Hall of Fame selections.
Throughout his career in play-by-play broadcasting, Costas has delivered numerous unforgettable calls. One highlight was Derek Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium, where he secured a walk-off victory with an RBI single against the Baltimore Orioles. Costas exclaimed, “A base hit to right! Here comes (Antoan) Richardson, they’re waving him home! The throw is close but he scores! On a walk-off hit by Derek Jeter!”
