Power Outages in Washington: Nearly 600,000 Affected by Bomb Cyclone
A severe winter storm has hit the Pacific Northwest, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that caused widespread power outages across Washington state.
This storm, referred to as a “bomb cyclone,” was accompanied by wind gusts reaching 55 mph at Sea-Tac Airport and as strong as 77 mph in Mount Rainier National Park on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle.
The NWS’s early Wednesday forecast indicated that the storm had already caused “numerous power outages” and instances of tree damage, with ongoing blizzard conditions expected through the Cascades.
Thunderstorms might also occur along the coast on Wednesday, and with another front forecasted to arrive on Friday, unpredictable weather is likely to persist over the weekend and into the following week.
Power Outage Statistics in Washington
As per the YSL News power outage tracker, approximately 597,000 outages were recorded in Washington state by 7:31 a.m. ET.
King County experienced over 465,000 outages, Snohomish County reported more than 75,000, and Kitsap County noted over 21,000 outages, according to the outage tracker.
