Brock Purdy’s Health Update: What to Expect from the 49ers QB in Week 12 Against the Packers

Updates on Brock Purdy’s Injury: Status for 49ers’ Week 12 Matchup Against Packers

The San Francisco 49ers are traveling to face the Green Bay Packers, currently holding the NFC No. 6 seed, in Week 12. With a record of 5-5, the 49ers are in desperate need of a win after suffering a tough loss to Seattle the previous week.

Sadly, their starting quarterback may not be available.

Brock Purdy participated in a limited capacity during practice on Wednesday and Thursday and is now listed as a question mark for the upcoming game against Green Bay. Here’s the latest information regarding his condition.

Is Brock Purdy Playing This Week?

No. Purdy did not participate in the team’s final practice on Friday before heading to Green Bay. Instead, backup quarterbacks Brandon Allen, Joshua Dobbs, and Tanner Mordecai rotated during practice, which took place on a rainy day.

Later that day, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Purdy would not be playing in Week 12. As a result, Allen will take over as the starting quarterback for the game against Green Bay.

On Friday morning, general manager John Lynch informed reporters that following Purdy’s MRI on his shoulder, the team feels optimistic but acknowledges that the situation remains “tenuous.”

Purdy has been a consistent starter since taking the reins in Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season and hasn’t missed a game due to injury. His last significant injury occurred in the 2023 NFC Championship game, where he suffered a UCL tear after just four passes.

Who is Brandon Allen?

Brandon Allen, 32, was selected in the sixth round, 201st overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent his rookie season with the Jaguars, followed by a stint with the Rams, where he played for two years before being released in 2019.

In 2019, he signed with the Denver Broncos and made his debut start, leading the team to a 24-19 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 9. After three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, he joined the 49ers in 2023.

Throughout his NFL career, Allen has appeared in 16 games, with nine of those as a starter. He has a 2-7 record as a starter, completing 149 out of 263 passes for 1,611 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions, leading to a career passer rating of 78.0.

His latest start was in Week 18 of the 2021 season with the Bengals, where he finished 15 of 29 for 136 yards and one touchdown in a 21-16 defeat against the Cleveland Browns.

When Did Brock Purdy Get Injured?

Purdy sustained a shoulder injury during last week’s loss against the Seattle Seahawks. Despite this, he completed 21 out of 28 passes, though he averaged only 5.7 yards per attempt—his lowest of the season.

Coach Shanahan denied that Purdy’s injury led to a reduced number of downfield passes, attributing the shorter throws to the Seahawks’ defensive strategies.

Brock Purdy’s Season Stats

This season, Purdy has played in 10 games, throwing for 202 completions out of 306 attempts, totaling 2,613 yards, 13 TDs, and 8 interceptions, resulting in a passer rating of 95.9. Additionally, he has rushed 51 times for 267 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns.
