Bronny James, rookie for the Los Angeles Lakers, assigned to G League team
Bronny James, a rookie for the Los Angeles Lakers, is moving to the G League.
On Thursday, the Lakers revealed that James will join their NBA G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, where he is anticipated to play his first game on Saturday against Salt Lake City. ESPN reports that he will play home games at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo, California, dividing his time between the G League and the Lakers’ main roster.
At just 20 years old, Bronny is the son of Lakers icon LeBron James and was selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA draft after playing at USC. He made his NBA debut with his father in the Lakers’ 110-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22, marking a historic moment as they became the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game.
So far, James has participated in four of the Lakers’ first eight games this season, accumulating a total of four points (0-of-6 FG, 0-of-4 3PT, 2-of-2 FT), along with two assists, one rebound, and one steal in 13 minutes on the court.
New Lakers head coach JJ Redick indicated that this dual assignment was always part of the plan. He told ESPN last month, “The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been intended from day one. (General manager) Rob (Pelinka) and I have talked about that. LeBron’s mentioned it too.”
Before the season commenced, LeBron expressed that having his son play in the G League could be an excellent chance for Bronny’s development as a player.
“I’m just looking forward to watching him grow as a basketball player, whether it’s with us or the G League team,” LeBron said on September 30. “His job is to work hard and improve, just like the rest of us. We aim to keep him accountable, and he will keep us accountable. If we all commit to this, we all improve together as one team. South Bay reflects us, and we reflect South Bay.”
