Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars Honor LA with ‘California Dreamin” at the Grammys

The 67th annual Grammy Awards took on a reflective mood on Sunday night as the music industry’s brightest stars came together to pay homage to a grieving city.

In light of the destructive wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles earlier this month, the event proceeded as planned but with a stronger focus on fundraising for recovery efforts.

During the night, host Trevor Noah and artists like Billie Eilish recognized the struggles of the City of Angels and the brave firefighters working tirelessly to quell the flames threatening the city.

One of the most impactful moments of the evening was when Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars—who had recently teamed up for the hit “Die With A Smile”—performed the classic anthem “California Dreamin’.”

This iconic song by The Mamas & the Papas, closely tied to the folk culture emerging from Laurel Canyon, conjures images of a perfect California. While they sang in harmony, Gaga and Mars conveyed deep emotion.

Their performance was preceded by a poignant video showcasing the devastating wildfires and the destruction they left behind. Heart-wrenching clips depicted raging flames and families mourning the loss of their homes and schools reduced to ash.

As the performances continued throughout the evening, the impact of the wildfires remained a prevailing theme. The show opened with Taylor Goldsmith (frontman of Dawes) leading a rendition of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” alongside Griffin Goldsmith, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, St. Vincent, Brittany Howard, and Brad Paisley.

Many celebrities wore blue pins on the red carpet to show their support for the MusiCares relief fund. Similarly, Noah, donning a blue pin himself, urged everyone in attendance and at home to make donations.
