Buybuy BABY Transitioning to E-Commerce: All Stores to Shut Down by 2024

Buybuy BABY to shut down all stores by the end of 2024; shifting to online shopping exclusively

The retail chain Buybuy BABY is saying farewell to its physical stores and adopting a digital-first approach.

In an announcement made on Friday, the company reflected on its challenging past year, stating that they “acknowledge the necessity for a strategic reset.”

“We are thrilled to share that Buybuy BABY is going through a transformation!” the retailer proclaimed on their website. “We are shifting to a digital-first model, concentrating all our efforts on enhancing the online shopping experience. This move is a result of careful consideration of feedback from our devoted customers and partners. Their insights have been crucial in guiding this new direction.”

Company underwent bankruptcy in 2023

The transition to an online-only store follows the retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on April 23, 2023, at the New Jersey Bankruptcy Court.

According to Reuters, Buybuy BABY was purchased by Bed Bath & Beyond for $67 million in 2007.

Buybuy BABY announced it will be closing all its stores by the end of this year.

As of October 18, shoppers will notice significant discounts as the store begins its transition toward closing, according to the company.

Here’s what customers should know regarding the closure of Buybuy BABY.

What should customers of Buybuy BABY expect during this transition?

To facilitate an easy transition, the retailer will implement the following measures:

  • Online Shopping: Customers can visit buybuybaby.com to browse and purchase products.
  • Registry Access: Customers can still manage their registry through buybuybaby.com. If you have a registry completion code, it can be used online or in-store on eligible items—note that in-store discounts will not stack.
  • Furniture Orders: The Buybuy BABY customer service team will reach out to discuss details for any pending furniture orders.
  • Gift Cards: Gift cards will be accepted at Buybuy BABY locations until October 31, and online at buybuybaby.com thereafter.

Other retailers undergoing significant changes

Bed Bath & Beyond also declared bankruptcy and closed its locations in 2023, but has transitioned to selling products online since Overstock acquired its intellectual property.

In June 2023, Overstock revealed it had successfully acquired Bed Bath & Beyond’s brand, customer database, website domain, and other intellectual property.

The company is now fulfilling customers’ desires for a return to physical store shopping.

The Container Store announced on October 15 that it will collaborate with Bed Bath & Beyond to sell its products at the specialty retail chain, according to their press release.

Additionally, Bed Bath & Beyond shared that it will be relaunching alongside another home décor retailer.

The two companies are forming a strategic alliance, which will allow Kirkland to become the exclusive physical retailer and licensee of new, smaller Bed Bath & Beyond stores (up to 15,000 square feet) across the country, according to the press announcement.

Additionally, Beyond is set to invest $25 million in Kirkland, as stated in the release.
