California Passengers Booted from Spirit Airlines Flight Over Crop Tops: Reports

California women removed from Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops: Reports

Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were taken off a Spirit Airlines flight from LAX to New Orleans due to their attire.

Two women from Southern California were escorted off a Spirit Airlines flight before takeoff for donning crop tops, according to reports and the airline.

Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo stated in an interview with KABC that they had boarded their flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans wearing sweaters. However, due to the lack of air conditioning on the plane prior to departure, they removed their sweaters, revealing their crop tops.

“We were wearing crop tops… with just a little bit of stomach showing,” said Tara Kehidi, as reported by KABC.

At one point, a male flight attendant instructed the women to “put something on” before leaving them, they recounted to the Los Angeles TV station.

“He told us both to put our sweaters back on,” Kehidi recalled, according to KABC. “We then asked, ‘Is there a dress code? Can we see a policy regarding crop tops on the plane?'”

Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were said to have breached Spirit’s ‘clothing standards’

Araujo mentioned the women felt “a bit embarrassed” as if they were being “treated like criminals,” as per KABC.

“Everyone on the plane was staring at us,” Araujo added.

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines released a statement to YSL News saying, “Our Contract of Carriage, which all guests agree to when making a reservation, includes specific clothing standards that all passengers must follow.”

“We are currently looking into the situation and are in touch with the guests regarding their experience,” the statement continued.

YSL News reached out to Kehidi on Monday, but has not yet received a reply.

What does Spirit’s Contract of Carriage entail?

The Contract of Carriage from Spirit Airlines states that the airline can refuse boarding or ask someone to leave if they are “barefoot or inadequately dressed, or if their clothing is considered lewd, obscene, or offensive.” However, it does not specifically mention crop tops or clarify what types of clothing might be deemed inappropriate or lewd.

The agreement also specifies that if a passenger is asked to leave, they are not eligible for a refund. Following their removal from Spirit Airlines, the women spent $1,000 on tickets with Delta Airlines to reach New Orleans, where they planned to celebrate Araujo’s 30th birthday, according to KABC.

“They really treated us like criminals—just because we were wearing crop tops on the plane,” Kehidi remarked.
