ESPN Strikes Deal with Ex-NFL MVP Cam Newton to Join ‘First Take’

ESPN has welcomed former NFL quarterback Cam Newton aboard as a regular contributor, mainly focusing on the morning show “First Take,” the network disclosed on Thursday.

Newton will make his first appearance this Friday during a recording at Tennessee State University as part of the show’s HBCU tour.

“I’ve always infused passion and energy into everything I do, and that will continue at ESPN,” Newton expressed in a statement. “I’m eager for the chance to share my viewpoint and match wits with the best in the game. Fans can anticipate the same intensity I brought to the field, in addition to authentic dialogue, bold opinions, and plenty of fun.”

He will join hosts Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim, along with fellow commentators Shannon Sharpe and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.

Newton spent 11 seasons with the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots, with his last appearance coming with the Panthers in the 2021 season.

He claimed the Heisman Trophy at Auburn and guided the Tigers to a national championship in 2010 before being chosen first overall by the Panthers in the 2011 NFL draft. He was awarded Rookie of the Year after throwing for 4,051 yards and 21 touchdowns.

He led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015, during which he was recognized as the league’s Most Valuable Player and also named Offensive Player of the Year.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Newton holds a record of 75−68−1 as a starting NFL quarterback, amassing 32,382 passing yards, 194 touchdown passes, and 123 interceptions, while also rushing for 5,628 yards and 75 rushing touchdowns.
