Cam Taylor-Britt Stands by ‘College Offense’ Comment After Bengals’ Loss to Commanders
After the game, Cam Taylor-Britt expressed that he does not regret calling the Washington Commanders’ offensive scheme a “college offense.” However, one has to wonder if he felt any regret when Washington’s rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels threw a 55-yard pass over him to wide receiver Terry McLaurin, during the second quarter of the Bengals’ 38-33 defeat on Monday.
“I stand by my words,” he stated to the media post-game. “There was no malice intended in that remark. It was blown out of proportion. Sure, I take responsibility for my comments. But we definitely took an ‘L’ as a team today.”
Daniels had an impressive performance, completing 21 out of 23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown, a remarkable 27-yard throw to McLaurin, was viewed by Next Gen Stats as the most unlikely touchdown of the season thus far. For the second consecutive game, the Commanders were able to avoid punting. They also racked up 108 rushing yards, averaging 6.2 yards per play.
The team’s official account on X even chimed in post-game, saying, “Not bad for a college offense.”
Last week, Taylor-Britt had remarked that Daniels, the overall second pick in the 2024 draft, isn’t tasked with much in their offense.
“A nice college offense,” Taylor-Britt mentioned, referring to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, saying, “(Daniels) mostly throws short passes, maybe a few intermediate ones.”
Kingsbury mentioned last week that he had not come across Taylor-Britt’s comments.
“He is entitled to his perspective,” the former Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals coach noted.
Taylor-Britt’s critical remarks about opponents have been a recurring theme this early in the season. Prior to the Bengals’ loss to the Chiefs in Week 2, he had commented on rookie receiver Xavier Worthy, emphasizing that while he is fast, “that’s about it.” Following that game, Taylor-Britt backed up his talk with a spectacular one-handed interception off Patrick Mahomes.
When asked about Taylor-Britt’s comments during the postgame press conference, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor responded, “That’s not our style.” He refrained from revealing whether he had addressed the matter with Taylor-Britt, who played college football at Nebraska.
“We honor our own team and commend the other team as well. There’s no need for us to take shots at anyone,” Taylor added.
