Campbell drops ‘soup’ from its historic name after 155 years
After over a century and a half, the Campbell Soup Company has decided to remove “soup” from its name.
This well-known brand has expanded significantly since it was started as Anderson & Campbell in 1869, adding various food and snack brands such as Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, Pace Foods, Prego, and Snyder’s-Lance, which create products ranging from salsa and pasta sauce to goldfish crackers, pretzels, and ready-to-eat meals.
The newly branded “Campbell Company” will keep its focus on the profitable snack sector, as highlighted in a recent press release, noting that snack sales increased by 13% last year, compared to a mere 3% growth in soup sales.
“This subtle yet important change maintains the iconic recognition, reputation, and equity the company has built over its 155 years while better reflecting the diverse range of our product offerings,” stated Chief Executive Officer Mark Clouse.
Further changes for Campbell
Recently, Campbell also acquired Sovos Brands, known for Italian grocery items such as Rao’s sauces, Michael Angelo’s frozen meals, Noosa’s Yoghurt, and Birch Benders pancake, cake, and waffle mixes and syrups. The $2.7 billion acquisition will strengthen Campbell’s food and beverage lineup, in which soup plays a role but represents a smaller segment of the overall portfolio.
“With our leading team, an excellent range of brands, a proven history of robust execution, and a commitment to enhancing our legacy of trust and impact, we have never been more equipped to achieve top performance and to be the most reliable and capable company in the food industry,” Clouse remarked.
