Canadian Spectators Show Discontent by Booing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ Amid Tariff Tensions with Trump

Canadian Sports Fans Boo U.S. National Anthem Following Trump’s Tariff Announcement

During the weekend, Canadian sports fans voiced their discontent by booing the American national anthem at various professional sports events.

This protest took place at NHL games, just hours after President Donald Trump confirmed his plans to impose new import tariffs. A notable scene unfolded on Sunday night when the Los Angeles Clippers faced off against the Toronto Raptors.

On Saturday, the president enacted three executive orders, introducing a 25% tariff on most Canadian and Mexican imports and a 10% tariff on goods from China, which will take effect on Tuesday.

What Was the Athletes’ Response to the Booing?

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue and forward Kawhi Leonard chose to remain silent about the situation when questioned after the Raptors secured a 115-108 victory.

Raptors forward Chris Boucher was also approached for comments post-game about the booing and whether he had encountered anything similar in the past.

“No, no, no,” responded the Canadian-born player and former Oregon Duck. “But have you ever seen us getting taxed like that?”

Who Performed the National Anthem Amidst the Booing?

A young 15-year-old singer initially received cheers during the NBA matchup, but as she began her performance of the U.S. national anthem, she was met with a barrage of boos from the audience.

The reaction from the crowd was mixed, featuring both cheers and boos during the performance of the American anthem. However, when the Canadian anthem, “O Canada,” commenced, the audience erupted into cheers.
