Cara Delevingne Takes on Elton John in ‘Step into Christmas’ Music Video: Check It Out
The British actress embodies the rock legend in a playful reimagining of his classic holiday video.
Step aside, Taron Egerton. A different star is stepping into Elton John’s shoes.
The legendary 77-year-old singer unveiled a new music video for his iconic Christmas tune “Step into Christmas” on Wednesday, featuring actress Cara Delevingne as his younger self.
This creative video is set in a recording studio and serves as a behind-the-scenes look at the original “Step into Christmas.” Delevingne captures John’s essence as she plays the piano adorned with a feather boa while the original track plays. The video combines her performance with clips from the original and reenactments of the production process.
The portrayal reveals a wonderfully chaotic vibe during the original shoot, with unexpected moments like a fan bursting in with a sign and producers wrangling a turkey in the hallway.
In a statement, John shared that he first encountered Delevingne at Glastonbury Festival last summer, leading to their mutual desire to collaborate. “When someone proposed the idea of her portraying me in a twist on the 1973 ‘Step into Christmas’ video, I thought it was an ideal chance,” he said. “Thank goodness Cara agreed because it turned out wonderfully.”
On her part, Delevingne referred to John as an “idol” and expressed that being cast in the role was a “dream I didn’t even realize I had until it became a reality.”
“Honestly, I wish I could channel Elton every day,” the star of “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” playfully remarked. “I hold out hope that one day Elton might return the favor and portray me in a yet-to-be-written, pitched, or funded biopic. Fingers crossed.”
“Step into Christmas,” co-written by John and Bernie Taupin, dropped in November 1973 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart. The song was certified triple platinum last year in John’s home country, the UK.
This latest offering from John follows the release of his new Disney+ documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” as well as a performance with Dua Lipa in a CBS special.
However, John has recently disclosed that he has been facing considerable vision impairment following an eye infection, making it uncertain when he might return to recording.
“It has been four months since my sight deteriorated,” he shared with “Good Morning America” in November. “My left eye is also not in great condition. There’s some hope that things will improve, but right now, I’m in a challenging position. I can conduct interviews like this, but going back into the studio to record is tricky since I can’t see the lyrics at all.”
