How Caspian Books in California fosters a sense of community

Independent bookstores are essential to their communities. They enrich local culture, create jobs, contribute to sales tax revenue, promote literacy, highlight diverse and emerging authors, connect readers to books in a meaningful way, and uphold the right to read and have access to books in their neighborhoods.

Every week, we spotlight a unique independent bookstore, exploring what makes each one distinct and sharing their special book recommendations.

This week, we focus on Caspian Books located in Tracy, California!

What’s your store’s background?

We operate a small downtown bookstore in Northern California. We pride ourselves on being woman-owned, indigenous-owned, and LGBTQIA+-owned.

Although this bookstore has been in existence for over a decade, we acquired it in 2023 and made it our mission to rebrand it as a community hub offering diverse experiences.

What sets your independent bookstore apart?

We are the sole bookstore in town and have dedicated ourselves to fostering a community atmosphere by organizing silent book clubs, welcoming local authors, and collaborating with local non-profits for events. Our transparency about our highs and lows has fostered a strong sense of unity among our community members, embodying the idea that “we’re all in this together.”

Running this bookstore has been a lifelong dream of mine since I was six. The experience is incredible, even when facing challenges.

Why should people support local, independent bookstores?

Shopping locally benefits our community’s economy. Moreover, I believe bookstores offer a level of engagement that cannot be matched online or in other settings since reading is such a shared experience. A physical space managed by someone passionate about books adds immense value to the experience!

What upcoming events, programs, or partnerships does your store have planned for this quarter?

We run a Silent Book Club that gathers twice a month! Additionally, we host “Night at the Bookstore,” where we open our doors after hours for private groups, such as date nights, book clubs, or birthday celebrations — we enhance the atmosphere with beautifully set tables, candlelight, sparkling drinks, and treats from a local bakery!

Check out these book recommendations from Caspian Books:

  • “Under the Whispering Door” by TJ Klune: “A uniquely comforting read that carries a profound existential message about life and what follows.”
  • “Bad Cree” by Jessica Johns: “An incredible narrative about loss and grief, beautifully interwoven with indigenous folklore.”
  • “The City and Its Uncertain Walls” by Haruki Murakami: “I admire everything written by Haruki Murakami.”
