Los Angeles Chargers’ Passing Game Shows Improvement Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

The Chargers (4-3) secured a victory against the struggling New Orleans Saints (2-6) with a score of 26-8 on Sunday, matching their highest point total of the season. Quarterback Justin Herbert recorded over 270 passing yards for the second consecutive game, while rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey became the first Chargers player this season to surpass 100 receiving yards in a single game. These are encouraging signs for a passing offense that was ranked 24th in the league prior to Week 8.

“Finding our identity is crucial. We must play each game according to its needs,” Herbert stated after the game. “When we throw a lot, it’s essential to be smart with the ball, make deep throws, and understand the moment. We trust our exceptional offensive line and solid run game, so it’s on us to make the most of these elements.”

From Week 2 to Week 7, the Chargers struggled to score a touchdown in the second half, but they finally found the end zone on Sunday.

McConkey showcased his talent with a memorable 60-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, followed by another significant 9-yard touchdown reception in the back of the end zone that helped seal the game in the fourth quarter.

“When we’re in sync, we know our capabilities,” McConkey remarked. “We’ve shown glimpses of our potential. It’s about building on each play and drive, and stringing together good games. We have to showcase what we can do on the field.”

McConkey concluded the game with a team-high of six catches, totaling 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Despite these positives, the Chargers remain among the bottom half of the league in both passing offense and red zone efficiency. They were 3-for-12 on third downs on Sunday. The team does boast the NFL’s top scoring defense and a top-10 overall defense, which successfully kept the Saints out of the end zone.

“Even when we haven’t won, our defense has performed well. Ultimately, we need to score points,” McConkey, currently leading the Chargers with 30 catches and 376 receiving yards, acknowledged. “They are making plays and generating turnovers, and we need to take advantage of those opportunities. The defense has been outstanding this entire season.”

Will the Chargers Seek to Trade for a Receiver?

As Week 8 progresses, Herbert and the Chargers’ passing game continue to search for their rhythm. Although they managed to win on Sunday without wide receivers Quentin Johnston (ankle) and DJ Chark Jr. (groin), bolstering the offense with another player could be key to making a serious playoff run.

Teams like the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs have all made significant trades for wide receivers recently. Players such as Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers and former Charger Mike Williams of the New York Jets are reportedly available. The question remains: Will the Chargers pursue additional wide receiver talent?

Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz face a little over a week to navigate their first major midseason decision together.

“I trust he’s looking out for our best interests. He knows both sides of the game,” Harbaugh said of Hortiz. “I’m confident he will do everything possible to strengthen our team.”
