Chet Holmgren injury update: Oklahoma City Thunder star suffers hip fracture

One unfortunate fall turned Chet Holmgren’s bright season upside down.

The Oklahoma City Thunder center sustained a fracture in his right iliac wing during a 127-116 defeat against the Warriors on Sunday night, as announced by the team early Monday. He is anticipated to make a comeback later this season, with a return-to-play protocol expected in about eight to ten weeks.

Holmgren’s injury occurred approximately five minutes into the game when he fell on his hip while trying to block a shot from Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins. The 22-year-old remained on the floor and was quickly attended to by trainers before being taken to the locker room.

He was unable to put weight on his right leg and did not return to the game.

“I’m not sure if I feel better or worse about going through something similar before,” Holmgren tweeted early Monday. “I know how to navigate this, what to do and avoid, and how rewarding the end is. Yet, I also understand the frustration this process brings and its mental toll. Most importantly, I’m disappointed that I can’t contribute to my teammates and play for our fans and supporters for a while.”

Before his injury, the towering 7-foot-1 player was on track to be one of the youngest All-Stars in the Western Conference. Over his first nine games, he averaged 18.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks—second highest in the NBA.

In his second year, Holmgren helped lead the league’s top-rated defense.

With Holmgren likely missing games until at least January, the Thunder will have to manage without a center for the next few weeks. Isaiah Hartenstein, who is recovering from a hand fracture, is projected to return by late November.

“Those who support me and our team, along with my passion for basketball, are a huge motivation for my return,” Holmgren added on Twitter. “Please don’t feel sorry for me; many people face real issues that don’t heal. Just wanted to update our OKC fans and family from my hospital bed.”
