Kansas City Chiefs Release Kadarius Toney Amid Receiver Changes
Following a frustrating and mistake-riddled 2023 season, Kadarius Toney is no longer part of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The team announced Toney’s release on Tuesday.
After scoring a touchdown and making a spectacular 65-yard punt return during Super Bowl 57, Toney was anticipated to be a key player in the Chiefs’ attempt to win back-to-back titles with a revamped receiving lineup. However, he became infamous for his mistakes in two significant games: he faced criticism for multiple drop catches in the first game against the Detroit Lions and was penalized for lining up offsides, negating a potential game-winning touchdown against the Buffalo Bills.
Toney did not participate in the final seven games of the previous season.
While the Chiefs achieved their goal of repeating as Super Bowl champions, the organization sought to significantly revamp their receiving options this offseason.
They acquired Marquise “Hollywood” Brown during free agency and selected speedster Xavier Worthy in the first round of the draft. On Monday, the Chiefs also reinstated JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had spent one season with the New England Patriots after delivering an impressive performance with 78 receptions and 933 yards in 2022 for Kansas City.
