Christian McCaffrey on Injured Reserve? 49ers Star Misses Week 2 Again
The San Francisco 49ers will not have their standout running back, Christian McCaffrey, for a second consecutive week.
The 49ers have confirmed that McCaffrey will not play this Sunday as they head to Minnesota to face the Vikings. He has been struggling with calf and Achilles injuries and did not participate in last week’s victory over the New York Jets.
On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted that the team might consider placing McCaffrey on injured reserve, which would keep him out for at least four games.
“It’s a consideration at this point,” Shanahan informed the media. “Yesterday was particularly difficult for him. It’s been up and down, but yesterday he reported the most pain, so we’ll be discussing options in the next 24 hours.”
In McCaffrey’s absence, the 49ers will turn to running back Jordan Mason, who stepped up significantly with career-best performances in carries (28) and rushing yards (147) in Week 1.
Brock Purdy, the 49ers quarterback, praised Mason’s efforts after last week’s game: “He did a fantastic job stepping in. Christian is undoubtedly the best running back in the league and what he brings is irreplaceable. However, Mason filled in admirably, helping others get open and allowing us to operate our offense effectively.”
McCaffrey was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 and played a crucial role in the 49ers’ journey to Super Bowl 58. During his 27 regular-season games with the team, he has recorded impressive stats: 2,205 rushing yards, 20 rushing touchdowns, 119 receptions, 1,028 receiving yards, and 11 touchdown receptions.
The 49ers traded for McCaffrey in a significant deal with the Carolina Panthers back in October 2022.
