Claressa Shields secures heavyweight women’s title with knockout of Danielle Perkins
Claressa Shields added another impressive knockout to her achievements, reinforcing her reputation as one of the greatest female boxers in history.
Shields knocked down Danielle Perkins with less than 20 seconds remaining in the 10th and final round of their championship match, capping off a dominant performance that won her the fight by unanimous decision (100-89, 97-92, 99-90). In front of a lively and enthusiastic crowd at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan—her hometown—Shields (16-0, 3 KOs) earned an undisputed title, making her the first boxer ever to hold undisputed titles across three different weight classes. While Perkins (5-1, 2 KOs) fought valiantly until the end, she found herself on the canvas as the bout concluded.
Shields started aggressively, applying early pressure. Utilizing her speed advantage, she effectively closed the distance between herself and the larger Perkins, landing a series of right hooks and overhands while maintaining a nearly constant left jab.
Despite enduring Shields’ onslaught, Perkins seemed to gain momentum in the last three rounds, delivering strong jabs and uppercuts. However, her growing aggression led to an opening, allowing Shields to land a powerful right hook that knocked her down just before the fight ended.
The Shields-Perkins match was the main event of a night featuring nine bouts in Flint, including four women’s matches. In the co-main event, Brandon Moore secured victory over Skylar Lacy by disqualification for the vacant USBA men’s heavyweight title. Additionally, three other Michigan boxers—Leon Lawson III, Joseph Hicks, and Joshua James Pagan—also emerged victorious, with Hicks and Lawson winning by technical knockout.
With this victory, Shields becomes the first American heavyweight, regardless of gender, to achieve an undisputed championship since Riddick Bowe in 1992. She also preserved her flawless record of 16-0 while adding another championship belt in her fifth weight class.
