Coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado football squad still have a shot at victory.

If they succeed against Texas Tech today in Lubbock, they will be one step closer to securing major achievements in college football—a Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

A win would allow them to maintain at least a second-place standing in the Big 12 as they have three regular-season games remaining.

However, a loss could significantly diminish those hopes.

The Buffaloes (6-2) are currently tied for second in the Big 12 standings with Iowa State, each boasting a 4-1 record in the conference behind BYU (5-0). The Buffs don’t face either team and would benefit from an Iowa State loss to enhance their chances.

Securing a win today against Tech is critical to solidify their position after having last week off. They are ranked 20th in the race for a playoff spot. Furthermore, a victory would boost the Heisman Trophy chances for standout player Travis Hunter.

However, the challenge won’t be easy. Texas Tech (6-3) features one of the nation’s top rushers, senior running back Tahj Brooks, who averages 130.9 rushing yards per game.

Texas Tech Brings It Within One Score

Uh-oh, Colorado. The Buffaloes allowed Texas Tech to narrow the gap to 34-27 with 2:12 remaining, but were able to recover the following onside kick attempt from the Red Raiders. Now, Colorado must run down the clock, starting with possession at midfield.

Tech made it competitive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Conyers, who dashed down the left sideline to secure the score. This was quarterback Behren Morton’s second touchdown pass of the match.

Tahj Brooks Sets Texas Tech Rushing Record

Texas Tech’s senior running back, Tahj Brooks, broke a school record for career rushing yards with a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter against Colorado. He eclipsed the record of 4,219 yards previously held by Byron Hanspard from the 1990s. By the fourth quarter, Brooks had amassed 124 rushing yards, though Tech still trailed Colorado 34-20.

Buffs Increase Their Lead in the Fourth Quarter

Colorado is now in control of its destiny for the Big 12 championship, leading 34-20 with 9:46 left in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech. The Buffaloes expanded their lead with a 33-yard field goal from kicker Alejandro Mata following an interception that set up a 24-yard drive from linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green, a transfer from Charlotte.

Colorado has scored on six of its last seven drives. If they can maintain this lead, they will secure sole possession of second place in the Big 12 standings, following Iowa State’s loss to Kansas on Saturday.

Tensions Rise in a Heated Game

Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire addressed the home crowd early in the fourth quarter, stating: “Stop throwing stuff on the field!”

Trash had been falling from the stands, with more than just the customary tortilla tosses; a lot of it ended up near Colorado’s sideline.

Colorado maintained a 31-20 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Significant Opportunity for Colorado After Iowa State’s Loss

Kansas defeated Iowa State 45-36 on Saturday, creating a golden opportunity for Colorado. The Buffaloes entered their game against Texas Tech tied for second place in the Big 12 with a 4-1 record.

With Iowa State’s defeat, the Buffs have control of their future in securing a spot in the Big 12 championship game on December 7. A victory against Tech would guarantee them no worse than second place, with three regular-season matches still to play.

BYU led the Big 12 standings with a perfect 5-0 league record as the day began.

At the conclusion of the third quarter, Colorado held a 31-20 lead over Tech.

A botched fake punt by Texas Tech proved costly. Facing a fourth-and-5 at their own 31-yard line, the Red Raiders tried a pass from a punt formation that fell incomplete.

This misstep allowed Colorado to take over at the Tech 31-yard line, and they needed only four plays to score a touchdown and extend their lead to 31-20 with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The touchdown was scored by the versatile Travis Hunter, who caught a second-down pass from Shedeur Sanders and sped down the left sideline for a 24-yard score.

Hunter has tallied six receptions for 95 yards, with Colorado scoring on their last five drives.

Colorado Regains the Lead

Colorado’s offense is on fire, reclaiming a 24-20 lead following a 5-yard touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders to receiver Will Sheppard.

Sanders thrown the pass into the right corner of the end zone, where Sheppard, a transfer from Vanderbilt, caught it to cap a 73-yard scoring drive with 4:25 left in the third quarter.

The Buffs have now scored on their previous four possessions after having struggled on their first four.

To date, Sanders has completed 21 passes out of 30 attempts for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas Tech Claws Back into the Lead

Texas Tech’s running back, Tahj Brooks, took a pitch on fourth down and found the end zone from 2 yards out, helping the Red Raiders regain the lead at 20-17 with 7:52 remaining in the third quarter against Colorado.

Both teams found success in finding the end zone to start the second half.

Brooks currently has carried the ball 21 times for 45 yards while pursuing the record for school rushing yards.

Colorado scored its first points since the first quarter, making nine plays for 66 yards on that drive.

Colorado Takes the Lead

Colorado claimed its first lead of the matchup during its initial drive of the second half when quarterback Shedeur Sanders rushed 7 yards for a touchdown. The Buffaloes now lead 17-13 with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Sanders has successfully completed 16 out of 25 passes for 177 yards, along with one touchdown from rushing.

On the defensive side, Colorado has kept Texas Tech scoreless on their last four drives and has limited top running back Tahj Brooks to a mere 35 yards on 17 attempts.

Colorado has responded with 17 consecutive points since Texas Tech opened the game with 13 unanswered points.

According to Fox Sports, Colorado wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. is questionable to return after sustaining a lower body injury, although details of the incident remain unclear. Before Saturday’s game, Horn was one of Colorado’s lead receivers, having accumulated 33 catches this season. However, he has not made a catch during the matchup against Texas Tech.

By the end of the first half, Colorado’s two-way standout, Travis Hunter, recorded three catches for 51 yards, although an interception he made was called back due to an offsides penalty in the second quarter.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders pushed the Buffaloes to the Tech 8-yard line in the final moments of the first half but faced pressure and threw an incomplete pass on third down, ultimately leading to the 25-yard field goal by Alejandro Mata.

Finally finding the end zone, the Buffaloes scored during their fifth drive of the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders to receiver LaJohntay Wester. After a short pass from Sanders, Wester sped down the left sideline, reducing Texas Tech’s lead to 13-7 with 7:33 remaining before halftime.

After punting on their first four drives, the Buffaloes seem to have gained some momentum.

Shedeur Sanders is currently 8-of-13 passing for 89 yards.

Texas Tech has scored on three consecutive drives since the start of the game, leading 13-0 after the first quarter. Meanwhile, Colorado has struggled, punting on its opening three possessions of the game.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders expressed curiosity this week about Texas Tech’s tradition of tossing tortillas during games. In the first quarter, standout player Travis Hunter found a tortilla on the field, picked it up, and appeared to tuck it into his pants. Texas Tech currently leads 7-0.
