Clemson and Dabo Swinney deliver strong message to ACC with overpowering victory over North Carolina State
CLEMSON, S.C. — In its opening match for the ACC this season, No. 19 Clemson triumphed over North Carolina State with a score of 59-35 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers’ offense quickly found its rhythm after a bye week, scoring on their initial four drives and amassing 45 points in the first half. The Clemson defense shone brightly without defensive lineman Peter Woods, forcing three turnovers and achieving two sacks to overpower the Wolfpack (2-2, 0-1).
This victory by the Tigers signaled to the ACC that they are poised to be one of the top teams in the conference.
Clemson outperformed North Carolina State with a considerable 408-164 advantage in total yardage during the first half, including an impressive 228 rushing yards compared to NC State’s mere 29. By the end of the first quarter, the Tigers led 28-0 and scored on seven of their eight offensive possessions. Quarterback Cade Klubnik played efficiently, completing 16 out of 24 passes for 209 yards, rushing for 70 yards, and contributing four touchdowns, one of which was a rushing touchdown.
On the defensive front, the Tigers effectively contained NC State freshman quarterback CJ Bailey. They employed aggressive blitzes that produced sacks and forced three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception).
With Woods absent, the Tigers needed a new leader on defense. T.J. Parker stepped up, as he was tied for the team’s sack record last season.
Parker recorded five tackles, including two sacks and a forced fumble against the Wolfpack. It’s noteworthy that Clemson came into this game with only two sacks so far this season.
During the first half, the Tigers allowed just 29 yards on the ground and 135 through the air. Parker’s dominance on the defensive line was critical, especially with Woods potentially sidelined for more games.
Searching for a backup running back to support Phil Mafah, Clemson might have found a promising option in Jay Haynes. The redshirt freshman stepped in for Mafah, who briefly exited due to injury in the first quarter but returned to play, and seized his chance to shine.
Haynes wrapped up the game with 42 rushing yards on eight carries, including a 19-yard touchdown on a well-timed handoff in the second quarter. He also contributed to the passing game by catching two passes for 17 yards. His performance was vital, indicating that there is depth in the running back position beyond Mafah.
