Video Captures ‘Unsafe’ Maneuver by Russian Fighter Jet Near US Air Force F-16
The U.S. military has shared footage depicting a perilously close interaction between a U.S. Air Force aircraft and Russian military planes above Alaska on Monday.
This video was recorded on September 23, when the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracked four Russian military planes operating within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), as stated by NORAD.
The ADIZ “starts at the edge of U.S. airspace and is a designated area of international airspace that mandates immediate identification of all aircraft for national security,” as defined by NATO, and it has become a common area of interaction between U.S. and Russian military forces.
‘Unsafe, Unprofessional, and Risky for All’
The video, captured from an Air Force F-16, reveals the American jet flying in proximity to a Russian Tu-95 aircraft. A second Russian fighter, the Su-35, then zooms in between the F-16 and the Tu-95, coming dangerously close to the U.S. aircraft.
General Gregory Guillot, NORAD and U.S. Northern Command’s leader, remarked, “The actions of the Russian Su-35 were unsafe, unprofessional, and put everyone at risk – not typical behavior for a professional air force.”
This “unsafe” incident follows only a few months after Russian and Chinese aircraft were intercepted in the ADIZ while operating together for the first time.
