A JetBlue aircraft being towed collides with a Cape Air plane, marking the second event of the day at Logan Airport
The U.S. Department of Transportation is looking into an incident where a JetBlue aircraft being towed collided with the rear of a Cape Air plane on Monday evening at Boston Logan International Airport, according to federal authorities.
This incident was the second involving commercial airplanes at the same airport on that day.
The Cape Air flight took off from Nantucket Memorial Airport in Massachusetts at 5:35 p.m. and arrived in Boston at 6:14 p.m., based on data from FlightAware, which monitors air traffic.
The collision occurred around 6:15 p.m., as stated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to YSL News the following morning.
“While being towed, a JetBlue Airbus A321 struck the rear of Cape Air Flight 617, a Tecnam P2012,” reported Rick Breitenfeldt, a spokesperson for the FAA, to YSL News.
At the moment of impact, the Cape Air flight was waiting to be parked at the airport, according to the FAA representative.
Two pilots from Cape Air taken to the hospital
JetBlue released a statement confirming that a tug moving the empty aircraft “made contact with a Cape Air aircraft” at the airport, as reported by YSL News.
No injuries were noted for JetBlue crew members.
The tow vehicle for JetBlue was taken out of service, and the JetBlue aircraft “will be thoroughly inspected,” according to the airline’s statement to YSL News on Tuesday.
Cape Air reported that there were three passengers and two crew members on board the flight from Nantucket to Boston, with no reported injuries among them, according to CBS News.
However, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), which oversees the operations at Logan Airport, indicated that two Cape Air pilots were transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
YSL News has contacted Massport and Cape Air for further details.
The FAA is conducting an investigation into the collision.
Incident coincides with two planes colliding at Logan Airport the same day
This event occurred on the same day as another incident in which two commercial aircraft collided on the tarmac at Logan Airport.
American Airlines Flight 109 made contact with the wingtip of a Frontier Airlines plane at Terminal E, according to airline representatives. A Frontier Airlines spokesperson mentioned that their flight was bound for Dallas.
The American Airlines flight arrived in Boston from Heathrow Airport in London and made contact with the stationary Frontier aircraft while maneuvering into its gate.
Both airlines confirmed that there were no injuries reported from this incident.
