Commanders part ways with kicker Cade York after two misses in their season debut
The Washington Commanders have decided to release kicker Cade York just one game into the 2024 season following a disappointing performance in Week 1.
During Washington’s 37-20 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, York failed to convert on two field goals from distances of 47 and 56 yards and had one kickoff go out of bounds. While he successfully made both of his extra-point attempts, head coach Dan Quinn suggested that a change at the kicker position was likely after the game.
“We’ll sit down and discuss it thoroughly to assess our situation,” Quinn commented. “There’s a lot to learn from that performance.”
York was acquired by Washington in a trade with the Cleveland Browns in August as a possible solution to their kicker dilemma. The Commanders had previously added veteran kicker Brandon McManus to their roster, but he was released after facing legal issues stemming from allegations of sexual assault when he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Originally chosen in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Browns, York had a solid rookie season, successfully completing 24 out of 32 field goal attempts and 35 of 37 extra points. However, he later lost his starting position to Dustin Hopkins in the subsequent season.
With York’s departure, Washington currently has no designated kicker, aside from punter Tress Way. Quinn stated on Monday that the team expects to announce their decision on a new kicker by Wednesday. Reports suggest they are likely to sign former Browns kicker Austin Seibert to fill the role.
