Commanders trade former first-round WR Jahan Dotson to rival Eagles
Jahan Dotson is starting afresh with an old rival.
The Washington Commanders have traded the wide receiver along with a fifth-round selection to the Philadelphia Eagles in return for a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks, the Eagles confirmed on Thursday.
Dotson, age 24, was drafted 16th overall from Penn State in 2022. However, under new head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters, the 5-foot-11, 182-pound player has not secured the No. 2 receiver position behind Terry McLaurin.
“(Quinn) didn’t draft me,” Dotson noted last week, as reported by the Washington Post. “Each and every year … in your profession, you need to demonstrate your worth and capabilities. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
Once in Philadelphia, Dotson is set to compete for the No. 3 receiver spot, as there was no standout player in training camp to fill the role behind top receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
With Dotson’s departure, the Commanders will rely on Olamide Zaccheaus, rookie Luke McCaffrey (a third-round pick), and Dyami Brown to support McLaurin and present additional offensive options for quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was the second overall pick in this year’s draft.
The trade involving Dotson marks the second rare intra-division deal in the NFC East within a week, following the Dallas Cowboys’ acquisition of defensive tackle Jordan Phillips from the New York Giants.
