We now know who will be hosting the Oscars in 2025.

Conan O’Brien has been chosen to host the 97th Academy Awards, as confirmed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday.

This will be O’Brien’s first time as Oscars host, although he has previously emceed the Emmys in 2002 and 2006.

“America wanted this, and now here it is: Taco Bell has a new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars,” the comedian laughed in his statement.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang called O’Brien the “ideal” host, praising his “sharp humor, passion for films, and expertise in live television.” Executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan echoed those sentiments, stating he possesses “all the traits of an exceptional Oscars host — he’s incredibly witty, magnetic, and humorous, having shown he excels at live events.”

This hosting role is O’Brien’s most high-profile television appearance since he left his TBS show “Conan” in 2021. He has since maintained his podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” and launched a new travel series, “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” on Max in April.

Most recently, Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars for the fourth time in March 2024, following previous stints in 2017, 2018, and 2023. In April, Kimmel mentioned he was asked to host again in 2025 but hinted that he might decline, joking he could reconsider to annoy President-elect Donald Trump, who criticized his past performance.

From 2019 to 2021, the Academy tried a format without a designated host when Kevin Hart withdrew in 2018 due to backlash over his past homophobic tweets. Following a successful 2019 Oscars without a host, O’Brien humorously expressed concern about the trend.

“People are saying maybe we no longer need a host. Do you know how frightening that is for me?  They’re discussing my career!”

After three years of no single host, Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, and Amy Schumer co-hosted the Oscars in 2022. Kimmel later argued that having no main host might have been problematic, as it caused confusion during Will Smith’s notorious slap of Chris Rock.

Potential nominees for the 2025 Oscars include Angelina Jolie, Zoe Saldaña, Timothée Chalamet, Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington, with films like “Dune: Part Two” and the upcoming “Wicked” likely contenders for best picture alongside titles such as “Anora,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Conclave,” and “The Brutalist.”
