Costco Issues Recall on Salmon Due to Potential Listeria Risk

Costco’s Smoked Salmon Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Risk

Certain smoked salmon sold at Costco late last year has been recalled over concerns of possible listeria contamination, according to federal officials.

Acme Smoked Fish Corporation, located in Brooklyn, New York, is recalling the Kirkland Signature brand smoked salmon, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA initially flagged this product in October 2024 due to potential listeria contamination. The recall is categorized as Class 1 by the FDA, indicating it carries the highest level of risk, which could potentially lead to serious health consequences, including death.

The affected product was distributed to the Southeast Costco Distribution Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Costco warehouses throughout Florida.

“All affected products were pulled from stores at that time,” said Deena Siegelbaum, a spokesperson for Acme Smoked Fish, in a statement to YSL News on Monday.

Although the product hasn’t been available in stores for several months, it’s possible that some customers may have frozen it for future use.

Details of the Recalled Salmon

The recall involves 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon packaged in twin 12-ounce packs.

The salmon is vacuum-sealed in a black-bordered plastic package, featuring the name “Smoked Salmon” in blue along with a graphic of a salmon on the front.

  • The product has a best-by date of Nov. 13, 2024.
  • The UPC code printed on the back of the package is 0 96619 25697 6.
  • The lot number appears on the front of the package as 8512801270.

Currently, there have been no reports of illness linked to this recall.

Symptoms of Listeriosis or Listeria Infection

Listeriosis, commonly referred to as listeria poisoning, is an infection caused by the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is deemed a severe illness that can be particularly dangerous for elderly individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

According to the CDC, symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures
  • Diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal-related symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, and/or severe infections in newborns
  • Possibility of death

Individuals at higher risk who show flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food should seek medical attention promptly.

Customers who have the recalled salmon are advised to dispose of it immediately or return it to Costco for a refund.
