If you are considering voting in the general election scheduled for Nov. 5, and haven’t registered yet, now is the time to take action in many states.
Each state has different deadlines for voter registration. While some have already passed, numerous states will close their registration doors in the next two weeks, and a few will do so in less than a week. Residents of North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Idaho only have hours left to register online, as their deadlines fall on Friday.
North Carolina is among the eight states labeled as toss-ups by Real Clear Politics, based on their comprehensive national polling data. This designation makes every vote in the state potentially more significant. The state has 16 electoral votes, contributing to the 104 that are currently considered toss-ups according to Real Clear Politics’ evaluations.
Voter Registration Deadlines by State – 2024
Out of the eight key winner-take-all toss-up states, voter registration has already closed in two: Arizona and Georgia. The remaining six, apart from Nevada, have only 10 days or less to register.

Alabama: Registration by Oct. 21. Sign up online.
Alaska: Deadline was on Oct. 6.
Arizona: Deadline was on Oct. 7.
Arkansas: Deadline was on Oct. 7.
California: Online registration until Oct. 21. In-person registrations can be done until Nov. 5.
Colorado: Deadline is Oct. 28. Register online. In-person registrations can occur until Nov. 5.
Connecticut: Deadline is Oct. 18 for online. In-person registrations can take place until Nov. 5.
Delaware: The registration deadline is on Oct. 12. Register online.
District of Columbia: Deadline is Oct. 15 for online registration. In-person registration can be done until Nov. 5.
Florida: Registration deadline has passed as of Oct. 7.

Georgia: Registration deadline was on Oct. 7.
Hawaii: Deadline is Nov. 5, register online.
Idaho: Registration closure is on Oct. 11. Register online. In-person registration available until Nov. 5.
Illinois: Deadline is Oct. 20 for online. In-person registration is available until Nov. 5.
Indiana: Deadline was on Oct. 7.
Iowa: Deadline is Oct. 21. Register online. In-person registrations are open until Nov. 5.
Kansas: Deadline is Oct. 15 for online registration.
Kentucky: The deadline was on Oct. 7.
Louisiana: Deadline is Oct. 15. Register online.
Maine: Deadline is Oct. 15 for online. In-person registration available until Nov. 5.

Michigan: Deadline is Oct. 21. Register online and in person until Nov. 5.
Minnesota: Deadline is Oct. 15. Register online. In-person registrations can be completed until Nov. 5.
Mississippi: Registration deadline has passed as of Oct. 7.
Missouri: Registration deadline was on Oct. 9.
Montana: The deadline was on Oct. 7 for online registration, but you can register in person until Nov. 5.
Nebraska: Deadline is Oct. 18 for online. In-person registration closes on Oct. 25.
Nevada: Online registration deadline is on Oct. 23, with in-person registrations until Nov. 5.
New Hampshire: You can register to vote any time until Election Day.

New Jersey: Deadline is Oct. 15. Register online.
New Mexico: Online registration closed on Oct. 8. In-person registrations open until Nov. 5.
New York: Deadline is Oct. 26 for online registration.
North Carolina: Deadline for online registration is Oct. 11. Same-day registration is available during early voting.
North Dakota: No registration deadline – any resident can vote.
Ohio: Registration deadline has passed as of Oct. 7.

Virginia: Deadline is Oct. 14 for online registration, and in-person registration is available until Nov. 5.
Washington: Deadline is Oct. 28 for online registration.

Wisconsin: The deadline is October 16 for registration. Additionally, in-person registration also has a deadline of November 5.
