A Visual Guide to Crafting the Ideal Snowman

When someone asks, or even sings, “Do you want to build a snowman?” the only reply should be yes.

Creating a snowman after a fresh snowfall is a classic winter pastime, suitable for all ages.

Recently, a significant winter storm swept through portions of the central and eastern United States, bringing heavy snowfall and gusty winds.

While wintry weather may complicate travel plans, families stuck indoors can enjoy their weekend by making use of the ample snow and a few creative additions.

YSL News visual journalists are here to guide you through the process of making the perfect snowman.

Step 1: Locate a Flat Area with Moist, Compact Snow

Choose a flat and shaded location to construct your snowman. Try to steer clear of bright sunlight to prevent melting. The type of snow you pick is crucial: if it’s easily packable, your snowman is more likely to hold up well. Fluffy or powdery snow is less ideal, as it will likely crumble.

To check the sturdiness of your snow, grab a handful and try to pack it into a ball. If it holds together, you’re good to go!

Step 2: Form the Snowman’s Base

Now it’s time to create the foundation of your snowman!

Start by packing a small snowball with your hands. Then, roll it along the ground to gather additional snow and enlarge the base.

Step 3: Create the Middle Section of Your Snowman

Follow the same process as Step 2: gather snow into a smaller snowball and roll it on the ground to add more. Ensure that this middle section is smaller than the base.

Step 4: Shape Your Snowman’s Head

It’s time to add the finishing touch by forming the head. Like before, pack a third ball of snow, rolling it to add size. This head should be the smallest of the three sections.

Once it’s packed well, gently place it on top of the snowman’s body.

Step 5: Decorate Your Snowman

Now it’s time to gather materials for your snowman’s facial features, arms, and other decorative elements.

Traditionally, a snowman is given a carrot for its nose, button eyes, stick arms, and pebbles for its mouth. Don’t forget to add some classic accessories like a top hat, scarf, and even a pipe for a charming touch!
