Alabama Football Players Share Thoughts on Donald Trump’s Visit During Georgia Upset
The Alabama football team put on an impressive performance for their distinguished guest Donald Trump during Saturday’s thrilling 41-34 victory over Georgia at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
With Alabama taking a significant 30-7 lead against Georgia before Trump’s departure at halftime, some might have considered him a good luck charm.
After Trump’s exit, Georgia rallied to score 21 points, indicating a competitive fourth quarter, which seemed to further the narrative about Trump’s influence.
However, Alabama supporters might remember Trump’s previous appearance in Tuscaloosa, which resulted in the Crimson Tide’s only defeat of the 2019-20 season against LSU, a team that later became the national champion.
So, what were the thoughts of the Alabama football players and staff regarding the Republican candidate’s presence at the Georgia game?
From the moment his attendance was announced until his midgame appearance, the Alabama players didn’t view Trump’s attendance as particularly significant.
Tight end CJ Dippre remarked that he didn’t see it as a “big distraction.” Instead, he considered it “kind of awesome.”
“I don’t engage in politics. I don’t vote and honestly, I don’t think I’m at the age where it’s necessary,” Dippre explained. “But it was cool to have such a prominent figure at the game.”
Linebacker Jihaad Campbell felt it was just another game day for the team.
“We didn’t let anything outside affect us,” Campbell stated. “We had ‘College GameDay’ there, and the game was on ABC; there were a lot of distractions, but we stayed focused.”
The thrilling finish of the game, highlighted by a spectacular 75-yard touchdown reception by Ryan Williams, was not attributed to any influence from Trump.
“We just maintained our composure and kept pushing,” Campbell noted.
