Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries in Response to Hurricane Ernesto

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines adjust routes due to Hurricane Ernesto

Cruise companies are modifying their travel plans to steer clear of Hurricane Ernesto. The storm caused harsh weather in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, leaving nearly half the island without electricity and leading to warnings of flash floods. The Virgin Islands experienced similar conditions.

The Carnival Pride ship from Carnival Cruise Line, which set off from Baltimore for Bermuda on Sunday, has moved its arrival in Bermuda up by a day, reaching the island on Tuesday and planning to depart on Thursday, the cruise line stated.

Carnival Magic skipped its scheduled stop in San Juan on Wednesday and will add a visit to Nassau in the Bahamas on Friday. This ship left Miami on Sunday for an Eastern Caribbean voyage.

“Since ensuring the safety of our passengers and crew is our main concern, we will keep monitoring the storm and will consider advice from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and local port authorities to provide updates as we receive more information,” the cruise line mentioned in a press release.

Norwegian Cruise Line has redirected its Eastern Caribbean cruises on the Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway ships to the Western Caribbean, according to a spokesperson. These ships departed from Miami on Monday and Sunday, respectively.

The new routes for these ships will include Roatan in Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, and Harvest Caye in Belize (the Sky will also have stops in Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios in Jamaica).

Norwegian Joy, which departed from New York for a cruise to Bermuda on Sunday, arrived at the island on Tuesday, a day ahead of its schedule. While it will stay at the Royal Naval Dockyard for two nights as originally planned, it will leave a day sooner on Thursday.

“The well-being and safety of our passengers, crew, and the towns we visit is our highest priority,” a spokesperson shared in an email statement.

Royal Caribbean International’s Rhapsody of the Seas will still visit all the ports on its Southern Caribbean cruise but in a rearranged order, as confirmed by a spokesperson from Royal Caribbean Group, which is the parent company of the cruise line. The ship departed San Juan on Sunday.

Icon of the Seas, which left Miami on Saturday, is now following a Western Caribbean route instead of its original Eastern Caribbean plan, with stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Roatan.

Symphony of the Seas, which departed from Bayonne, New Jersey, for an Eastern Caribbean journey on Friday, will now stop in Nassau instead of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
