Cruise companies are modifying their Caribbean routes to dodge Hurricane Helene.

The storm is anticipated to hit the U.S. as a Category 3 on Thursday. According to the National Hurricane Center, “Given Helene’s extensive size, there is a significant risk of life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula as well as the Florida Big Bend.” Northern Florida and southern Georgia may also experience “destructive hurricane-force winds.”

Carnival Cruise Line’s ship, Carnival Paradise, which sailed from Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, has changed its itinerary by replacing a scheduled stop in Cozumel, Mexico, with Costa Maya on Tuesday.

Similarly, Carnival Valor has omitted its planned visit to Cozumel on Tuesday after departing from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Saturday. Meanwhile, Carnival Horizon will no longer stop by Grand Cayman on Wednesday, opting instead for a visit to Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic on Thursday after leaving from Miami on Sunday.

In a statement, the cruise line emphasized, “The safety of our guests and crew is our utmost priority. We will continuously monitor the storm and take into account guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and local port authorities to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.”

Carnival has recommended that passengers whose cruises may be affected by the storm keep an eye on their emails and enroll in text message notifications.

Five ship itineraries from Royal Caribbean International have been altered thus far, as reported by the company’s parent entity, Royal Caribbean Group:

  • Independence of the Seas, which departed from Miami on Saturday, changed its Tuesday destination from Cozumel to Nassau in the Bahamas.
  • Mariner of the Seas, also departing from Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, has canceled its Tuesday stop in Cozumel and will spend the day at sea instead.
  • Serenade of the Seas, which left Tampa on Sunday, modified its Tuesday and Wednesday itineraries, replacing stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya with Freeport and Nassau.
  • Wonder of the Seas will forgo most scheduled stops, omitting Cozumel, Roatan in Honduras, and Costa Maya. The ship, which departed from Port Canaveral on Sunday, will now visit St. Thomas and St. Maarten.
  • Grandeur of the Seas will head to Nassau and Freeport instead of Costa Maya and Cozumel, which were originally planned for its Wednesday and Thursday stops. The cruise left from Tampa on Monday.

MSC Cruises’ MSC Seascape, which departed from Miami on Saturday, has also altered its itinerary. The ship visited Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos on Monday in place of Falmouth, Jamaica, and changed its Tuesday call from George Town, Grand Cayman, to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. On Thursday, the ship will visit Nassau instead of having a day at sea.

MSC Seashore, departing from Port Canaveral on Sunday, will return on Friday, one day later than planned. The subsequent voyage for this ship will be reduced by one day.

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy also canceled its stop in George Town on Tuesday, choosing to have a day at sea instead. This ship departed Port Canaveral on Saturday.
