Dana Carvey Reveals Mysterious Biden Role on ‘SNL’ After Weeks of Secrecy

Dana Carvey reveals ‘top secret’ Biden role on ‘SNL’: ‘I’ve kept it quiet for weeks’

Dana Carvey is finally able to share an exciting secret: he’s returning to “Saturday Night Live.”

The 69-year-old comedian discussed his comeback on his “Superfly” podcast with David Spade, revealing that he played President Joe Biden on the show during its season premiere on September 28.

“It’s been top secret,” he shared. “I’ve kept it hidden for weeks.”

Carvey showcased his Biden impression during a star-studded cold open, where he teamed up with Maya Rudolph portraying Vice President Kamala Harris at a campaign event.

In a humorous moment, Carvey’s Biden remarked, “A lot of people forget I’m president, including me,” and when Rudolph’s Harris thanked him for bowing out of the 2024 race, he quipped, “I didn’t want to. You made me!”

Carvey mentioned that “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels invited him to play Biden after he casually performed an impression of the president on his podcast with Spade. He expressed a belief that there have not been many exceptional Biden impressions, particularly compared to former President Donald Trump, portrayed by James Austin Johnson on “SNL.” “I didn’t see enough Biden impressions out there,” Carvey remarked, noting that Biden is “trickier” to mimic.

Carvey was a regular on “SNL” from 1986 to 1993, where he famously impersonated President George H. W. Bush. Over the years, various actors like Jim Carrey, Jason Sudeikis, and Woody Harrelson have also portrayed Biden on the show.

During the podcast, Carvey emphasized that his main goal with the Biden impression was “to keep it funny” rather than delivering a political statement. He also shared a funny moment from the sketch where Biden starts playing around with the phrase “build back better,” leading to the spontaneous line about “I can’t believe it’s not butter,” which he noted was not scripted. “Originally, it was supposed to be ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,'” he remarked, adding that he considered other phrases like “Bed Bath and Beyond.”

In addition to his podcast impressions of Biden, Carvey has also played the president on late-night shows. In a 2022 episode of the “About Last Night” podcast, he noted observing Biden’s speech patterns, including his tendency to say “no joke” even when discussing serious topics. Carvey pointed out that Biden has become increasingly “defiant,” which he incorporated into his impression.

The “SNL” season premiere also featured Jim Gaffigan as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, and Bowen Yang as Senator JD Vance.
