Daniel Jones acknowledges his role in being benched: ‘I did not perform well enough’

After Thursday’s practice, Daniel Jones addressed the media for the first time since the New York Giants decided to bench him in favor of third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito.

Jones approached the podium, ready to share his thoughts with reporters.

“I wrote this down to ensure I express myself properly,” Jones explained.

The experienced quarterback reflected on his six-year career with the Giants and discussed what lies ahead for him after being benched.

Interestingly, Jones began his remarks by discussing his time with the Giants as if it were in the past.

“Playing for the New York Giants has genuinely been a dream come true,” said Jones. “I am very thankful to the Mara and Tisch families for allowing me to play here. The Giants are a first-class organization, and I have immense respect and gratitude for all those who have helped build and maintain its legacy.”

Jones continued by expressing his gratitude toward his teammates and coaches from his duration with the Giants. He also acknowledged the fans, stating that their enthusiasm was a significant part of what makes representing the Giants so meaningful.

Following that, Jones addressed his benching directly, taking responsibility for not meeting expectations after signing a four-year, $160 million extension with the team.

“There have been great moments, but we all wish there had been more,” he reflected on his time with the Giants. “I fully accept my responsibility in not delivering more victories. No one wanted to win more than I did, and I gave everything on the field when it came to preparation.”

“This season has undoubtedly been disappointing for everyone, and I wish I could have contributed more,” he stated. “I take complete responsibility for my role in this. I did not perform consistently enough to achieve the desired team outcomes.”

Jones acknowledged that he understood the team’s rationale behind benching him and recognized that his performance played a significant role in prompting this change, though he remains optimistic about future opportunities.

“I love the game and being part of a team,” he expressed. “I am looking forward to the next opportunity and believe there is still a lot of good football ahead of me. I’m excited about that.”

However, it appears that Jones may not expect to return to the Giants in 2025. It is likely that New York will let him go during the offseason. The critical question now is whether he will remain with the team until the end of the current season.

Will the Giants part ways with Daniel Jones?

While it is improbable that New York will release Jones before the conclusion of the 2024 NFL season, they have demoted him to the fourth position on their quarterback depth chart. DeVito is set to be the starter, with Drew Lock as his backup. Meanwhile, Tim Boyle, who was recently signed, has been practicing ahead of Jones, who is now primarily handling scout team duties.

This decision may not necessarily reflect poorly on Jones’s abilities. In fact, the Giants might be benching him to avoid triggering a $23 million guarantee that would come into effect if he were to get injured while playing, which could complicate their ability to release him later.

As for whether Jones will accept this backup role for the remainder of what has been a difficult season for the Giants, only time will tell. We have seen other teams, like the Las Vegas Raiders, allow veteran quarterbacks like Derek Carr to step away from the team after being benched.

Could Jones receive a similar chance from the Giants? It is within the realm of possibility. However, considering Jones’s evident love for the Giants and the sport of football, he may fully embrace the fourth-string role while honing his skills in preparation for free agency in the offseason.
