Decoding Mike Tyson’s Training Clips: Insights and Enigmas for the Upcoming Jake Paul Showdown

Insights and Questions from Mike Tyson’s Training Videos Ahead of Jake Paul Fight

The latest training videos of Mike Tyson have resurfaced, but their implications remain unclear.

Prior to Tyson’s medical issue on May 26, which caused a fight delay, he had shared eight short clips on social media showcasing his training for the upcoming match against Jake Paul. After resuming training in July, new footage has emerged.

Much like the earlier videos, these new clips highlight Tyson’s formidable strength.

“It’s not an illusion,’’ remarked boxing analyst Teddy Atlas after viewing the initial clips before Tyson’s health scare. “People are saying, ‘He’s going to destroy Paul.’ ’’

However, Atlas remains skeptical, and so do the bookmakers. This skepticism existed even before Tyson’s health challenge. Why? Because those Tyson videos, totaling around 60 seconds of action, leave out crucial details.

Along with three other trainers, Atlas analyzed the clips taken prior to Tyson’s medical incident, categorized as an “ulcer flareup” by his team, and shared their insights with YSL News Sports.

Can Mike Tyson’s Left Hook Stand Up to Jake Paul?

Having trained Tyson as a teen under Cus D’Amato, Atlas expressed his expectation that the videos display glimpses of Tyson’s peak performance.

“Even an old racehorse can still show fleeting bursts of speed that a regular horse can’t, even when it’s past its prime,” Atlas said.

“However, one shouldn’t assume he can replicate that against an opponent whose movements are unpredictable like he did in his 20s.’’

Reflecting on the latter part of Tyson’s career, which saw him lose three of his last four fights, Atlas commented, “I’m not sure about his mental toughness now.”

He added that Tyson’s once-powerful left hook may not be sufficient to secure a victory.

“The strongest punch Paul possesses is the straight right hand,’’ Atlas noted. “If thrown with precision and without delay, that straight right can outpace a left hook, especially if timed poorly.”

Key Factor in the Fight: Stamina

Robert Garcia, who was named Trainer of the Year by The Ring magazine in 2011 and has trained champions like heavyweight Anthony Joshua, reviewed the videos and stated that Tyson looks “explosive and impressive.”

“Yet at 57, he will find eight rounds challenging,” he warned. “It’s going to be tough.”

“He is a threat due to his strength, but I believe it won’t take long before he may not be as effective,” Garcia said.

Garcia emphasized that stamina is crucial, and this trait cannot be gauged merely by watching the videos. Tyson is significantly older than Paul, by 30 years.

“The good news is he will still possess his power,” Garcia remarked. “He has the spirit and strength. But stamina will likely be his main issue, especially if he endures some punches and manages to push through two or three rounds.”

“Eventually, even with extensive training, I doubt Tyson can last a full eight rounds in a real match. It’s challenging, indeed.”

Is Mike Tyson Still Strong and Resilient?

From 1998 to 2006, Ann Wolfe was a dominant force in women’s boxing, achieving 16 knockouts, with five happening in the first round, and capturing titles across four weight classes.

Now a trainer, she sees more than just brute strength in Tyson’s training recordings.

“You can observe his focus and determination,” she noted, highlighting this was different from the end of his professional career when he appeared weak and defeated.

Wolfe also noticed signs of Tyson’s well-known timing, which could offset Paul’s youthful advantages.

“Sometimes the opponent may be quicker, but timing is key,” she stated. “And Tyson appears to retain his speed.”

What leaves Wolfe with questions after viewing the videos?

“He seems in good shape,” she acknowledged. “But I’d like to know how his body responds when he takes a hit.”

Aging Fighters: What Do They Lose Over Time?

Buddy McGirt, who has trained notable boxers like Antonio Tarver, Arturo Gatti, and Laila Ali, shared his thoughts about Tyson’s training footage.

“He’s incredibly powerful,” McGirt remarked. “That’s the last quality a fighter tends to lose—their punching power.”

“He appears fast and strong, but nothing replaces the reality of an actual fight.”

These real fight scenarios could highlight issues that arise with aging, McGirt proposed.

“You lose your reflexes and ability to withstand punches,” he expressed. “He hasn’t faced punches in over 20 years.”

“He has enjoyed a good life for two decades, but that adds up. Meanwhile, you have a young man like Paul who has remained active.”
