San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel to be Out for Several Weeks due to Calf Injury
Deebo Samuel, wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, will be unavailable for the next few weeks.
On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan informed the media that Samuel will be sidelined for “a couple weeks” due to a calf strain he suffered during the 49ers’ 23-17 loss against the Vikings in Week 2. In that game, he made eight receptions for a total of 110 yards.
Samuel currently holds the team’s lead in targets (19), catches (13), and receiving yards (164) after just two games.
The absence of Samuel will leave the 49ers without two of their key offensive weapons for the upcoming weeks.
Additionally, running back Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve on Saturday due to ongoing calf and Achilles tendon issues. He won’t be eligible to return until Week 6. Together, these two stars contributed a staggering 3,140 total scrimmage yards and 33 touchdowns last season.
“Losing great players is always challenging. But this is a part of the game and happens across the league,” Shanahan remarked. “We have to adapt to these circumstances.”
While the 49ers will feel the impact of losing Samuel and McCaffrey, they still have talented players like 2023 second-team All-Pro WR Brandon Aiyuk, five-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle, and promising running back Jordan Mason to step up offensively.
The 49ers will head to Los Angeles for a Week 3 matchup against the Rams. The Rams themselves are dealing with injuries, as coach Sean McVay announced that WR Cooper Kupp (ankle) will be out for “a good amount of time,” potentially joining WR Puka Nacua (knee) on injured reserve.
In Week 4, the 49ers will return home to host the New England Patriots and play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.
