Deion Sanders reveals one requirement for his potential NFL coaching roles
Deion Sanders had previously stated that he had “no interest” in taking on an NFL coaching position, regardless of how successful he might be in college football. In a 2022 interview with “60 Minutes,” he shared that he would find it challenging to coach players who earn substantial salaries but don’t have a genuine passion for football.
However, during an interview that aired on ABC on Wednesday, the head coach of Colorado introduced a new stipulation regarding his openness to an NFL coaching position.
“You know what?” Sanders expressed on the show “GMA3: What You Need to Know.”
“The only way I would consider it is if I were to coach my sons.”
He made it clear that he meant both of his sons, not only his quarterback son, Shedeur, but also his safety son, Shilo. Both recently wrapped up their eligibility by playing for him at Colorado. Shedeur is anticipated to be a top NFL draft pick this April, while Shilo’s prospects are less certain.
At 57 years old, Sanders has been the focus of ongoing discussions about his future in coaching, especially since next season could be his first without his sons, whom he has been guiding since they were young.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer appeared on GMA3 to promote the new season of his documentary series, “Coach Prime,” which highlights his final year coaching Shedeur and Shilo. In the series, Sanders mentioned that he was “pretty much 99 to 100% sure that the 2024 season would be my last opportunity to coach my kids.”
He has also hinted at a new contract to ensure his long-term commitment to Colorado, where his current contract extends through 2027. He recently completed his second season with a record of 9-4.
“I love Colorado,” Sanders stated on Wednesday during GMA3. “I love my Buffaloes. I appreciate everything we are constructing together, and I genuinely admire Boulder, Colorado.”
To prepare for the future, Sanders has already recruited two quarterbacks to take over for Shedeur in the 2025 season. His next campaign at Colorado kicks off on August 30 at home against Georgia Tech.
